Nakshi Kantha Cushion (med bolster)
Nakshi Kantha Cushion (med bolster)
Price range: £50.00 through £60.00
Each cover has been made from part of a repurposed Nakshi Kantha, backed with natural linen fabric to frame this exquisite embroidery. Nakshi Kantha is an age-old traditional embroidery technique, made using layers of cotton saris bound together with tiny running stitches. An over-embroidered design often of natural motifs such as leaves and animals is typical. Using a limited color palette these fabrics are striking in their naive portrayal of rural life. 60-80 years of age the work is very detailed, each cushion a unique piece of Bengali history.

Fabric:
Perfect in their imperfections, each piece is unique. The finely-stitched kantha quilt that this cushion is cut from is made from up to 6 layers of vintage 100% cotton sari and sewn together with thousands of tiny running stitches. A product of female resourcefulness and creativity, Kantha is an age-old Indian tradition. Fabrics are between 40-80 years old. Every quilt is carefully selected for its condition, design, and authentic appeal. Freshly washed to ensure softness.
All fabrics are ethically hand-picked by Tanya on her regular trips to India. Quilts are sustainably repurposed by a family-run business that we have enjoyed a working relationship with for over 10 years. Read more here.
